An AED in the workplace: how much difference does that little box really make?
An AED at work is not legally required everywhere, but it can make the difference between life and death. What you need to know.

In cardiac arrest, the chance of survival drops by about 10% for every minute without defibrillation. In practice, an ambulance often takes more than 8 to 10 minutes to arrive — time the casualty simply does not have. That is exactly why an AED (automated external defibrillator) in the workplace can make such a big difference.
Is an AED compulsory?
In Belgium, an AED is not legally required everywhere or for every business — that depends on the sector, size and specific regulations, which can vary by region and activity. More and more businesses are consciously choosing one, even without a strict requirement, precisely because the device has such a direct impact on survival chances.
Why an AED is safer than people often think
An AED is designed to be used by untrained people: the device analyses the heart rhythm itself and delivers a shock only if it is necessary and safe. Voice instructions guide you step by step. You cannot “accidentally” harm someone with it.
An AED is only as good as its maintenance
An AED has electrodes and a battery with an expiry date. An unmaintained device that fails when needed is worse than no device — because it gives a false sense of security. A maintenance contract (checks, timely replacement of electrodes/battery) should therefore accompany every AED purchase.
AED + training + action cards: the complete chain
An AED alone is not enough. Those who bridge the first few minutes with chest compressions before the device arrives also help determine the outcome. That is why an AED, up-to-date first aid training and clear action cards work best together, not separately.
